About the course
A grassed parkland oasis amid Whyalla's red dirt and saltbush
Whyalla Golf & Bowling Club is a public, 18-hole parkland course in South Australia, playing to a par of 72. Established in 1940 and designed by Syd Chandler, the layout features fully grassed fairways and greens with 13 mapped bunkers. On-site facilities include a driving range, putting green, pro shop, restaurant/dining, cart and club hire, and parking. The club sits about four kilometres from central Whyalla, opposite the Visitor Centre and Maritime Museum.
Set within the semi-arid landscape of the upper Spencer Gulf, the course is often described by visitors as an oasis surrounded by red dirt and saltbush, with the occasional kangaroo or emu adding to the experience. Players consistently praise the friendly welcome and helpful customer service, making it a popular stop for those driving through the region. When fully open and in season, the greens and surrounds earn high marks, with several reviewers calling the course immaculate. Reflecting its remote setting, conditions can swing with the seasons, and visitors should be prepared for dry, dusty spells in hotter months as well as occasional maintenance work on the back nine. Overall it enjoys a warm reputation as an approachable, well-tended community club worth seeking out.
