Golfing in Shire of Augusta Margaret River
Two 18-hole courses serve Augusta Margaret River, and they could hardly feel more different. Augusta Golf Club near Leeuwin dates from 1958 and was laid out by Murray and Eileen Dawson with Maxine Bishop; it is volunteer-run bush golf on sand greens, including the novelty of black oil sand, over rolling and sometimes hilly ground with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean and the Blackwood River valley. Margaret River Golf Club, created by local enthusiasts in the early 1950s near the mouth of the Margaret River, is a private members' club that takes visitors by booking. Its par-72 parkland layout runs past 6,000 metres through wine country, with well-presented fairways and plenty of tame kangaroos, joeys in tow, for company along the way.
