Golfing in Byron Shire Council
Byron Shire's golf is coastal parkland with real variety, spread across three public 18-hole courses from three different eras. Mullumbimby Golf Club, a short drive from the centre of town and dating from 1932, is the easygoing country option: a mostly flat, walkable par 70 beneath Mt Chincogan, with farmland views, water in play and a 15th known as the Billabong hole. Byron Bay Golf Club, from 1957, plays longer and tougher near Australia's most easterly point, mixing sweeping ocean views with water hazards, bunkers and an interesting, rolling front nine. In the shire's north, Ocean Shores opened in 1972 to a Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge design, an unusual layout of six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s that winds past native flora and tidal lakes to big, well-protected, quick greens.
