Golfing in Burdekin Shire Council
Cane fields, open skies and a famous home club define golf in the Burdekin, on the delta of the Burdekin River in North Queensland's Dry Tropics. Both courses are public. Ayr Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 championship course and the home club of Karrie Webb, the former women's world No. 1 and World Golf Hall of Fame inductee. It is regarded as one of the better courses in the north, with excellent conditioning, true-rolling greens and the odd patch of buffalo grass to navigate in a quiet, peaceful setting. Home Hill Golf Club was formed around 1932, when locals decided they wanted their own club rather than travelling to Ayr, and plays nine holes from dual tees for a full round, hosting the Home Hill Open among its competitions.
