Golfing in Charters Towers Regional Council
Golf took hold early in this old gold town: Charters Towers was among the affiliated clubs when the Queensland Golf Association joined the Australian Golf Union in 1920. Today the game here is simple, friendly country golf on two public nine-holers. Charters Towers Golf Club is a par-72 country course that can be played as a full 18, maintained by volunteers and known for the quality of its greens. It is more of a genuine test than its compact size suggests, and sitting next to Dalrymple Tourist Park, it is within walking distance of accommodation. Out at Greenvale, on the Burdekin River along the Gregory Developmental Road, the locally run country club keeps a public nine-holer of its own, a rustic, tree-shaded outback stop where travellers can camp nearby.
