Golfing in Townsville City Council
Townsville's golf sits in the Burdekin Dry Tropics, framed by Castle Hill, the Ross River and Cleveland Bay, and all five courses are public. Rowes Bay is the scenic pick: a largely flat seaside parkland beside conservation land, first played on 4 November 1967 when 78 members teed up, with well-shaped doglegs and water tucked into unexpected spots. Townsville Golf Club at Rosslea, on the Ross River, and Tropics at Kirwan are suburban 18-hole parklands; Tropics is known for conditioning that holds up through harsh summers, with water and sand in play. Magnetic Island Golf Club at Picnic Bay, the only course on the island, is a short, surprisingly challenging layout with a famously friendly welcome. Mystic Sands at Balgal Beach, established in 1993, is a coastal nine-holer among native forest with mountain backdrops.
