Golfing in Flinders Shire Council

Golf in Flinders Shire is the genuine outback article, played across the cattle and black-soil grazing country of north-west Queensland. Both courses are public, and neither pretends to be anything other than bush golf. Hughenden Golf Club, in the town on the banks of the Flinders River some 390 kilometres west of Townsville, is an 18-hole, par-70 course with natural fairways and sand greens. Conditions vary with the season and quieter periods, so it rewards players who arrive with relaxed expectations and a sense of adventure. The small community of Torrens Creek has a public par-71 course of its own, a quiet country round far from the busier clubs of the coast. For travellers crossing the north-west with clubs in the car, either makes for a memorable, unhurried break from the road.
