Golfing in City of Fremantle
Golf at the mouth of the Swan River comes in two very different forms. Royal Fremantle is the heavyweight: a private members' club founded in 1905, laid out by Arthur Oliphant and Peter Anderson and one of the few clubs still on its original site. It has hosted the Australian PGA Championship, and its par-71 walking layout, opening with named holes such as Oliphant's Drive and Smith's Domain, tests fitness as much as skill. Fremantle Public Golf Course, opened in 1975, is the everyday option, a par-68 public nine-holer with a driving range and lessons on site. It suits casual rounds and newer players, though tree-lined fairways, sloping greens and well-placed bunkers make it trickier than it first looks.
