Golfing in Nambucca Valley Council
Nambucca Valley's stretch of Gumbaynggirr coast holds two public courses, and one of them has a genuine claim to fame. Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club plays on Stuart Island, surrounded by the Nambucca River, and bills itself as Australia's first island golf club. The club dates from 1926, and today's 18 holes are a Ross Watson design with bent grass greens: a walkable par 70 where river views frame nearly every hole, the variety is pleasant and the river deck is the obvious place to finish. Macksville Country Club, in the council seat, offers a par-73 country and parkland round with tree-lined fairways, smooth-rolling greens and a touch of water in play. It is not a fierce test, but the views over the rolling Nambucca Valley are reward enough, and the greens staff and volunteers keep it in fine shape.
