Golfing in Alexandrina Council
On the southern Fleurieu Peninsula, Alexandrina pairs one of South Australia's best public-access courses with a set of friendly country clubs. Mount Compass is the standout: Brian Crafter designed the first nine but died before construction, so his son Neil completed it in 1995 and added the second nine three years later. Its links-style bunkering, gorse, large fast greens and genuinely penal rough have lifted it into Golf Australia's Top-100 Public Access rankings, so bring your best game. South Lakes at Goolwa South, dating from 1966, is a flat, well-conditioned parkland near the coast with a famously welcoming pro shop. Strathalbyn's public nine-holer, from 1897, plays among ancient gums with small, testing couch greens, and Ashbourne is a gently undulating nine-hole members' club that welcomes visitors.
