Golfing in Wattle Range Council
Spread across the mostly rural Limestone Coast, Wattle Range's three public courses give a neat cross-section of South Australian country golf: bush, parkland and sea. Millicent Golf Club, out at Mount Burr, traces local golf back to a nine-hole paddock course in 1904 and now plays to par 66 through natural bush on undulating, watered fairways, with quick, true greens that hold up even in the wet and a friendly volunteer crew behind the conditioning. Penola Golf Club, about 10 kilometres south of town, is flat but well wooded, and its tight, tree-lined fairways reward straight hitting; you can often have the place almost to yourself, with kangaroos for company. Beachport is the coastal nine, a wide, breezy layout across from the caravan park with tidy tees and greens, played on an honesty-payment basis.
