Golfing in City of Clarence
Along the Derwent's eastern shore, Clarence runs the full range of Tasmanian golf, from championship to casual. Royal Hobart moved to Seven Mile Beach in the post-war years and hosted the 1971 Australian Open won by Jack Nicklaus; it's a private members' club on a Vern Morcom layout, presented in superb condition with quick, true greens. Tasmania Golf Club, an Al Howard design from 1971, sits on Barilla Bluff with water on three sides and welcomes visitors to a windswept, demanding headland round with fast, tricky greens and memorable views. Llanherne (1994) is a public coastal nine near Seven Mile Beach that plays to par 72 off dual tees, and Iron Pot at South Arm is a quirky, relaxed public nine. Richmond is a private, hilly nine above Barilla Bay where a cart is worth considering.
