Golfing in Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council
Two Riverina towns, two public 18-hole courses, and they make an odd couple. Cootamundra Golf & Sports Club, established in 1895, calls itself the oldest golf club in country New South Wales, and its par-71 course is heavily bunkered, the golf sitting alongside bowls, croquet and a busy social calendar at a genuine community hub. Gundagai Services Golf Club goes the other way: a par-70 layout of 4,848 metres with raised grass greens and no bunkers at all. Instead the challenge comes from tight fairways, tricky hole positions and water, with some holes running beside the river. Flat and easy to walk, rarely crowded and kept in fine condition with full grass coverage, it is a pleasant surprise for a town of its size, and it is handy to the freeway for anyone breaking a long drive.
