Golfing in Maranoa Regional Council
Maranoa is outback country, centred on Roma about 500 kilometres west of Brisbane, and all five of its courses are public 18-hole country layouts. Roma Golf Club, dating from 1924, is the anchor: expansive fairways in a distinctly outback setting, greens that hold up impressively given the dry conditions, and members happy to share a yarn and a beer after the round. It has also hosted play on the Outback Queensland Masters tour. Mitchell Golf Club trades on laid-back country charm, with a sociable mix of long-time members and juniors. Injune Golf Club at Gunnewin, a par-71 layout, has hosted its own Carnarvon Carnival, and Surat and Yuleba complete a circuit of small-town clubs, each an unhurried, no-frills round for travellers heading through the south-west.
