Golfing in Rockhampton Regional Council
On the Tropic of Capricorn beside the Fitzroy River, Rockhampton has played golf since 1902, when a nine-hole course with natural grass greens opened on the Harbour Board Reserve. Rockhampton Golf Club in West Rockhampton, established in 1920 and credited to Al Howard, carries that story on as a public par-71 18 and is widely seen as the region's premier course: narrow fairways, water in play and enough length to demand accurate ball-striking. The rest is relaxed, everyday golf. North Rockhampton Golf Club plays 17 holes to par 65, with dual tees making up a full round and a friendly, good-value feel. Mount Morgan has a nine-hole country course with a bar and function room, and Gracemere Lakes is a 10-hole layout where water comes into play, fun for a casual hit.
