Golfing in City of Kingston
Running along Port Phillip's north-eastern shore, Kingston is the heart of the Sandbelt, and most of its golf sits behind members' gates. Kingston Heath at Heatherton, founded in 1909 with a Dan Soutar layout and Alister MacKenzie bunkering, was ranked second in Australia by Golf Australia in 2024 and has hosted the Australian Open many times; its golf rewards strategy on firm, flat ground. Commonwealth (1920), with its slick, sloping greens, and Woodlands (1913), a thinking golfer's course of small, firm greens, head a strong field of private clubs that also includes Southern beside Braeside bushland, Spring Valley, lake-wrapped Patterson River and the heavily bunkered Capital. Public golfers are served too: Rossdale at Edithvale (1928) weaves through pines, banksias and dunes, while council-owned nine-holers at Spring Park and Edithvale offer short, well-kept rounds suited to beginners.
