Golfing in City of Whittlesea
Two very different courses sit in Melbourne's outer north, where the City of Whittlesea runs from Thomastown and Epping up to Mernda and the Whittlesea township. Growling Frog at Yan Yean is the headline act: a Graham Marsh design opened in 2004 across 280 acres of bush and wetland, open to the public and ranked in Golf Australia's Top 100. At 6,185 metres it is a genuine test, its natural undulation, strategic bunkering and responsive greens rewarding careful planning over raw power, with kangaroos often watching on. Whittlesea Golf Club at Humevale, founded in 1937, is a members' club that welcomes visitors, playing an undulating par-73 parkland layout through the Humevale Valley among native bush, small lakes and more kangaroos, with one notably long double par 5 and its best seasons in spring and autumn.
