Golfing in City of Launceston
Australia's third-oldest city has two 18-hole courses that share a name in their history. Launceston Golf Club at Punchbowl, a private members' club founded in 1899, was first called the Mowbray Golf Club because its links sat inside the Mowbray Race Course, and settled on its current name in 1908. Its parkland course, close to the airport and CBD, is known for excellent conditioning, fast, true greens and strategically placed bunkers that make it a thinking golfer's test rather than a showcase of views. Today's Mowbray Golf Club at Newnham is a separate club: formed in 1934 as a nine-hole course, it grew to 18 holes in the 1960s and is open to the public. It is a friendly, family-oriented parkland club with a varied mix of holes and a relaxed bar for after the round.
