Golfing in Brisbane City Council
Brisbane's golf is old, plentiful and spread along both banks of its river. The Brisbane Golf Club at Yeerongpilly opened its course in December 1896, and today plays a compact, private par-69 with plenty of short holes. Royal Queensland, founded in 1920 on riverfront land at Parker Island, is a private members' club and the state's top-ranked course, a strategic test of wide fairways, centre-line bunkers and choices from every tee. St Lucia Golf Links, a 1926 Alister MacKenzie design, is one of the city's best-known public courses, forgiving off the tee and full of gullies, while Gailes at Wacol (1924) welcomes visitors to its kangaroo-dotted parkland. Indooroopilly's 36 riverside holes, Virginia, Nudgee, Keperra, Wynnum and Oxley lead a long public list, with hilly Ashgrove, McLeod and Wolston Park adding variety.
