Golfing in Alpine Shire Council
High Country golf in Victoria's north-east comes with big mountain backdrops, and all four courses here are public. Bright Country Golf Club is a Tony Cashmore design from 1989, an 18-hole, par-72 course on the valley floor in the foothills of the Alps, with the Ovens River in play on several holes, immaculate bent grass greens and glorious autumn colour; it is fun rather than punishing. Myrtleford's 18 holes run through old river red gums on narrow, mostly flat fairways to small, domed greens, so accuracy matters more than power. Mount Beauty looks out over the Kiewa Valley, with fast greens, a hilly back nine where a cart helps, and kangaroos and black cockatoos for company. Dederang has a nine-hole country course dating from 1968 for a quiet, unhurried round.
