Golfing in Wellington Shire Council
Sale is the hub of Wellington Shire's broad stretch of Gippsland, and all six of its courses are public and belong to the Golf East Gippsland district, so visitors are welcome everywhere. Loch Sport, by the Gippsland Lakes about 40 minutes from Sale, is the odd one out: a full 18 holes on sand greens, volunteer-kept and full of wildlife, ideal for social golfers. The rest are full-length country 18s. Sale Golf Club plays over sandy ground, short but tricky, with bunkers, water and an opening climb to an escarpment overlooking the wetlands. Yarram is a tough, rolling sandbelt course in native bush, Heyfield's kikuyu fairways play longer than they look into small greens, Newry is flat and walkable among big gums and creek crossings, and Maffra is an open, welcoming club with a caravan park alongside.
